What is UK Citizenship?
A person who becomes a British Citizen is one who has a close connection with the United Kingdom, can enter or leave the UK anytime they wish without any conditions or restrictions regardless of where they wish to settle in the world.
Why Apply for UK Citizenship?
The main benefit of having UK citizenship is that the restrictions and conditions that apply to any other form of entitlement to stay in the UK are completely lifted. There are no time limits for leave or entry, no employment restrictions and individuals have privilege to resource to public funds and services.
UK Citizenship Eligibility
UK Citizenship can be achieved by Ancestry or Naturalization, both of which have certain eligibility criteria.
For UK Ancestry you must:
- Be of age 17 years or older
- Be a Commonwealth citizen and have a grandparent who was born in the UK
- Intend to seek employment in the UK without resourcing to public funds
- Have obtained entry clearance and have resided in the UK for at least five years
For UK Naturalization (Spouse to a UK Citizen) you must:
- Be of age 18 years or older
- Have lived in the UK for a minimum duration of 3 years
- Already be on Indefinite Leave to Remain
- Not have spent a period of more than 270 days outside the UK for the 3 years duration
- Not have spent a period of more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months of the 3 years period
- Have a good level of English or Welsh or Gaelic language
- Be a person of good character
For UK Naturalization you must:
- Be of age 18 years or older
- Have held Indefinite Leave to Remain for at least a year
- Not have spent a period of more than 450 days outside the UK for the 5 years duration
- Not have spent a period of more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months of the 5 years period
- Have a good level of English or Welsh or Gaelic language
- Be a person of good character.
UK Citizenship Conditions
Please note UK Citizenship will not be applicable if an individual has been in breach of the UK Immigration rules in any way at any time of the duration of residence in the UK. |
